shadowtricker: (words)
Write ten words that start with a letter, and explain what they mean to you, and then if anyone replies you give them a letter so they can do the same and pass it on.
I have been given T.

Thorn - This should be rather self explanatory. Rey helped me to come up with the character, hence her interest in drawing him. I must admit when I originally conceived of his convoluted yet somewhat predictable story, it seemed more oriented towards a work of fantasy fiction. Adapting him for livejournal RP in the Nexus has added all kinds of unexpected dimensions, and I'm quite pleased with the slow evolution of his character there. So pleased and fascinated, that I neglect this journal far more than I should... hmm.

Toomai - 'Toomai of the Elephants' by Rudyard Kipling, one of my favourite stories. It can be found in 'the Jungle Books'.

Thoth - While I've always had an interest in mythology, I never thought much on the Egyptian deities. Janewt's portrayal of Thoth has given me an interest, as he's precisely the sort of god I would do well to be allied with, given my interest in books and writing. The character has also removed some of Thorn's intrinsic distrust in gods, an idea that was central to the original versions of the character, and inspired me to push Thorn towards poetry. I adore poetry, and I adore writing, but I have no gift for writing poetry. This particular direction of plot has driven me to make the attempt, nonetheless.

Tea - There was a time, not so long ago, when my drink of choice was Scotch. Now nearly six years sober, I find I have become a tea addict and connoisseur. It was an unintentional shift, and I have this completely irrational worry that I am doing some injustice to my Irish heritage, but truth be told I have spent more time consistently in England than anywhere else, even if I am legally an American these days. My particular drink of choice is Irish Breakfast tea, which is the next best thing to coffee, and nowhere near as bad for the stomach.

Threnody - I'm not sure why this is a word that leapt rather unexpectedly to mind while making this list, but it became quite insistent in my brain. I have seen too many people pass on, perhaps, but I have my way to honour them. I feel that music is one of the most powerful forces in the world, stronger and more universal than any ordinary writing. Its ability to express deep feeling spans barriers of language, background, and age.

Theology - As mentioned above, I've always had an interest in mythology and various pantheons. Celtic mythology is my particular forté, but by no means the only culture that interests me.

Three - My favourite number, and one that seems significant in mythologies the world over.

Typewriter - I learned to type when there was no such thing as a computer, and at times I find I still miss the old ways. The computer is brilliant for many reasons, most notably the lack of need for white-out, but when I'm simply hammering out some idle thoughts in Word I find myself longing for the way things were. I still own a typewriter, and use it on occasion when I'm having trouble composing my thoughts on a screen. The most severe drawback I find in using the typewriter again is a sort of lingering association to the days when I scraped a living as a hack writer, so that when I do have the bloody thing all set up and sit down with my mug of coffee/tea and my thoughts, my next impulse is to light up a cigarette. I also notice the difference in required pressure applied for proper key depression, or to put it more simply, Rey accuses me of murdering the computer keyboard because my impulse is to type too hard.

Thurisaz - Yes, I'm starting to stretch a bit here. I'm not at my sharpest these days due to a recurrent bout of insomnia, but it is my favourite of the futhark runes, representing gateways. I have a love of the inherent symbolical significance of gateways, boundaries and thresholds - another t word.

Time - 'who steals our years away
Shall steal our pleasures too,
The mem’ry of the past will stay,
And half our joys renew.'
Too much has been written, and more eloquently than I consider myself capable of.
